10 Fun Facts About Father's Day


Father's Day was started in the United States in the 20th century and since has been celebrated every year in June. The daughter of an American Civil War veteran, Sonora Smart Dodd led the efforts for fathers to be recognized. After hearing a sermon on Mother's Day at her church Dodd's fought relentlessly for fathers to be honored, because her father was a single dad who took care of her and her five brothers and sisters.

In 1972, the proverbial Dodd's fight for familial equality culminated when President Nixon made Father's Day a permanent national holiday in the United States.
